Scott Print secures a Green Business Excellence Award

John and Tim Scott of Scott Print focus on energy savings

After a stellar performance at the WA PICAs, Scott Print has beaten three other finalists to claim the 'Green Business Excellence' gong at the AIM WA WestBusiness Pinnacle Awards for the outstanding results it has achieved through key initiatives demonstrating its commitment to excellence in green business.

Sponsoredby AIM WA and The West Australian, the Pinnacle Awards are Western Australia’s premier business leadership awards recognising organisations across the state that outperform.

Under the guidance of general manager of sales and marketing, Tim Scott, every step in production – from administration through to prepress, printing and postpress – is constantly reviewed to ensure environmentally-friendly procedures.

Since Tim Scott joined his cousin John in the 35-year-old family business, his mission has been to improve the company’s environmental footprint. “The first stage was to achieve ISO14001 certification, which led us to analyse our whole business practices including every aspect of our waste and environmental impact. From there we monitored our key performance indicators to attain other accreditations such as Process Green, FSC, Sustainable GreenPrint and Green Stamp certification.”

He points out that achieving acceptable environmental accreditation is a combination of different practices at Scott Print. “We recycle all our paper from the office, and have fitted LED lighting throughout the office and factory. Even little things make a difference; like monitoring the amount of ink we use on the presses, and our choice of more environmentally-friendly alternatives. Basically we recycle or reuse all of our consumables.”

John Scott takes up the story of their path to ‘Green Business Excellence’. “In the last 12 months we went through an exercise with Enterprise Connect which resulted in us obtaining a Clean Energy grant. We were then able to undertake new initiatives such as the 60kW solar panels on the factory roof and the replacement of air conditioning in the downstairs factory. We are now not only not taking as much electricity off the grid, but also saving electricity costs.”

The two new Komori Lithrone presses – an A1 GL840-P HUV eight-colour long perfector an A2 LS629 HUV six-colour plus coater – have also contributed, says Tim Scott. “We have gone from three machines down to two that produce as much work and can already see the energy saving.”

John confirms that Scott Print was one of the first companies in Western Australia to implement environmental initiatives. “Nowadays clients want to deal with companies who have environmental credentials,” he says. “In the tender process, particularly Government departments will demand certifications such as the Forestry Stewardship Certification. From the top down, everyone is wanting environmentally-friendly printing.”

Scott Print received $10,000 prize money which it donated to Shake It Up Australia Foundation.
