International Print Day 2016 gets the smarts

Become part of the official IPD 2016 social feed

The third annual International Print Day (IPD) will be held on October 19 2016. This year’s theme is ‘education’ and the designated hashtag is #printsmart. Participants are encouraged to share images and content in the spirit of community and fun, using the educational angle.

IPD was first created to get print trending around the world via social media using a designated hashtag. Originally using Twitter as a platform, IPD is now cross platform with Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Vine being used to get the message out.

The first iteration in 2014 was fully online, with many printers and some paper merchants across the world taking part, posting pictures, quotes, videos and more to celebrate the print medium. The traction IPD has gained over the years means people from all around the world are being exposed to print.

In 2015, IPD included events with a breakfast in Melbourne hosted by Stephanie Gaddin, Australian patron for International Print Day. Several printers and print industry suppliers also hosted their own events around Australia. A similar breakfast event will be held in Melbourne this year.

“As the patron of the event for Australia, it has always been my ambitious goal for Australia to set the tone. The educational event we’ve created in Melbourne is an opportunity for printers and paper merchants to invite and host their clients, to network and gain knowledge too,” said Gaddin. “We should highlight the sectors of the industry that have grown and continue to grow. These wins we can publicly celebrate via IPD.”

This year Gaddin is keen to see all sectors of the industry get behind IPD – whether it’s a printer, paper merchant, designer or student. There is a real opportunity to expand the world events taking place and bring more of the print and marketing industry into the social media spotlight.

Part of her aim for the 2016 IPD is to focus on apprentices and students to show that there is new blood in the industry and provide excitement about the future a career in print and its related industries can offer.

For companies and individuals keen to participate in IPD some ideas about what to share include images of recent jobs (ideally tagging clients in the work too, with their permission) or interesting/fun examples of integrated marketing campaigns.

Video is also encouraged this year as a quick, easy way to celebrate print. Anything from behind-the-scenes videos in the print shop or interviews with key clients talking about their experience with print, why they buy printed materials etc.

To become part of the official IPD 2016 social feed, both #IPD16 and#printsmart hashtags should be used on all content uploaded on October 19 .

More details about the Melbourne event location and topic will be posted here.
