AIP technical dinner focuses on industrial labelling and adhesives

Dr Carole Lawrence, UPM Raflatac Oceania

The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), in conjunction with Surface Coatings Association of Australia (SCAA) will be holding a technical dinner on Wednesday, October 28 at Box Hill Golf Course focusing on the topic of industrial labelling and adhesives. Guest speakers are Lance Barlow, Dr Carol Lawrence and Richard Lau.

Learn about the many different types of label adhesives from food grade or repositionable adhesives, designed to easily correct automatic labelling errors, to ultra-strong industrial strength products designed to stick to bulk storage pallecons, including many aspects of a product’s lifecycle.

Lance Barlow, industry manager - adhesives, fibre bonding and construction polymers, BASF, will cover PSA label innovations and technologies. As PSA labels become more widely used, the demands on the adhesive have increased. His presentation will cover some of the chemistry involved in meeting the challenges of PSA label usage and some of the newer PSA technology.

Dr Carol Lawrence, sustainability and technical service specialist, UPM Raflatac Oceania, will provide an insight into pressure sensitive adhesives for novel self-adhesive labels. Dr Lawrence's presentation will give attendees basic adhesive knowledge and the contacts to acquire more in-depth information should a specific label adhesive problem present itself in the future. The presentation is also suitably technical to engage more experienced scientists in an area which they may not be familiar. Learning outcomes include: adhesive compositions, their manufacturing methods and combining their properties to solve operational industrial requirements across a broad spectrum of businesses.

Richard Lau, narrow web business manager, DIC Australia, will address the topic of brand protection and evolving food safety compliance in flexible packaging. His presentation will discuss new innovations in special effects and barrier coatings. He will also provide information on the latest global food packaging compliance issues in regards to ink technology and attendees will discover evolving trends in brand protection technology.

This technical presentation will appeal to:

  • Packaging technologists who wish to gain an understanding of innovative labelling.

  • Technical managers seeking to expand their experience of different coating technologies.

  • Production managers who encounter labels throughout their processes.

  • Designers whose products will ultimately need a label.

  • Marketing professionals using labels as part of a product strategy.

  • Supply chain and sourcing specialists involved in product decoration or logistics.

  • Students or those new to industry to expand their horizons.
