Every little thing done perfectly

The Annual Review produced by Spectrum Print

A job that looked simple, but had every component done perfectly, has landed the Business Print Category prize at Pride In Print for Spectrum Print of Christchurch.

The Market Gardeners Ltd Annual Review 2014 was a masterpiece of print perfection, winning unstinting praise from judges who commented: “An excellent design and expertly-completed print job.”

The photographs were very well produced throughout, and clever use of print techniques was used to pick up the names of workers and to highlight a quotation.

Senior judge Fraser Gardyne described it as “small but perfectly formed”. “It is one of those jobs that look simple – but it is simple because every little thing has been done perfectly,” he said.

Spectrum Print production chief Shane Goggin said the achievement was a huge boost for the firm which had been devastated in the earthquakes – only recently building back to a staff of 26, having reduced from 60 down to eight at one point.

“Were-opened up at Christchurch just 18 months ago and tonight we won three Gold Medals and a Category,” he said. “The team will be rapt. I’ve been sending off texts all night – they are blown away with it. Spectrum has a good name in Christchurch, but this will reinforce it.”

Elaborating on the technicalities of the job, Goggin said the designers had wanted the names of Market Gardeners’ staff highlighted in opaque white, but when trialled on the press the effect initially fell flat.

“So we said if you want to make this work we have to UV print. Then it will be fully opaque and it will stand out perfectly – and it did. That’s not something that has really been done before.

“The other key factor is we were producing work that had to meet a deadline – especially being an annual report – so we want do a nice job but we’ve got to keep in mind that we only have so many days to get it produced.”
