LIA sets the date for Queensland Graduate of the Year Award

2014 finalists for the Queensland LIA–Heidelberg Graduate of the Year

The Queensland LIA – Heidelberg Graduate of the Year will be announced on July 7. In addition to the presentation of the finalists for this elite prize, the event will also showcase 1st, 2nd and 3rd year graduates from a range of registered training organisations.

This year the event will be a stand-alone function, rather than being part of the Queensland PICA Awards, as a result of the positive response from employers, family and the wider printing community.

The competition is open for students in any sector of the printing trades to take advantage of this great opportunity. In 2014 the winner was Paul Talbot, a mature age apprentice from Greenridge Press in Toowoomba.

The LIA – Heidelberg Graduate of the Year Award is the longest running continuous award of the Institute, dating back to 1972. The award is presented annually in each mainland state at special presentation dinners. Heidelberg provides handsome award plaques to the winners and certificates to the employer.

The winning graduate in each state is chosen by a highly qualified judging panel of LIA members. The candidates are put forward by TAFE teaching staff as the ‘pick of the bunch’ in their particular stream. There are usually four to eight such candidates in each state, generally covering the spectrum of the printing trades.

Winners from the current and previous year are then individually interviewed by a national judging panel of eminent industry leaders and a winner is selected to receive the GAMAA – LIA National Graduate Scholarship Prize, which is awarded biennially.  A condition of acceptance of the $15,000 prize is that the money must be used in the furtherance of the winner’s education.
