Heidelberg Award recognises excellence

Richard Timson congratulates Robert Soutar of Adams Print

Print is rightly regarded as a lean and intelligent link in the multi-channel communications chain – and yet experience shows that quality is as important as it has ever been. The Heidelberg Award for Excellence in Craft at the National Print Awards recognises those who achieve such excellence.

The coveted Heidelberg Award is presented for ‘Excellence in Craft’. It was created to support the NPA’s own founding objective – ‘to recognise and encourage the achievement of excellence in print’ – and has been widely regarded as the ultimate award for quality in print in Australia for more than 30 years.

Each year, the Award is judged by an independent panel from all the gold medal winning entries, across all categories of print, and is awarded to the work which in the judges’ opinion, best represents excellence in its field.

“It is a long time, perhaps, since printing was commonly referred to as a ‘craft’,” acknowledges Richard Timson, managing director of Heidelberg Australia, “but the quality standards required by clients today are as high, if not higher, than they have ever been.”

Much of the value in print, he says, is very much to do with its ability to physically connect with the viewer, to communicate and to influence. Because print is a physical medium which is not only in the viewer’s environment but often right in their hands, it must bear scruitiny and effectively form that tactile connection. This, he says, is where the achievement of quality is so important.

“Today’s market is an exacting one. The print buyer and the consumer are all far more educated about quality print and a highly competitive market makes it essential that print service providers meet or exceed those standards. To do so requires dedication, planning and attention to detail – and to do it profitably in a commercial environment involves even more commitment.

“At Heidelberg, we continue to be inspired by those who make that commitment and who consistently produce exceptional quality, day in, day out, whether they are producing short run digital, screen printed banners, inkjet signage or high-end offset advertising material.

“The Heidelberg Award celebrates those ‘craftspeople’ and we are very pleased to continue our long association as a founding Gold Sponsor of the National Print Awards by once again presenting the Award for Excellence in Craft.”

The 2015 Heidelberg Award for Excellence in Craft will be presented on Friday, May 15 at the National Print Awards Presentation Dinner at Waterview in Bicentennial Park, Sydney Olympic Park. Further information about the event can be found at www.nationalprintawards.com.au
