The winners for the 2014 Newspaper of the Year awards, organised by The Newspaper Works, were announced at a gala event in Sydney, attended by more than 400 guests. Brisbane’s Courier-Mail took out Daily Newspaper of the Year National/Metro while the inaugural Weekend Newspaper of the Year award went to The Weekend Australian.
More than 1,000 entries were submitted to this year’s PANPA awards, which cover newspapers, photography, advertising, marketing, environment, print and production. The awards were sponsored by Norske Skog.
A change of criteria for the Newspaper of the Year awards has placed greater emphasis on the quality of journalism, digital execution and the ability to record a growing audience.
The Newspaper Works CEO Mark Hollands said: “Newspapers from all over the Asia Pacific set an extremely high standard in their submissions and left our judges locked in debate over the major Newspaper of the Year winner.
“We have some of the best newspapers in the world and the Newspaper of the Year awards continue to attract great support despite the increasing commercial pressures on the industry and, therefore, newspaper colleagues. I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to enter, and in doing so, contributed to the sense of community of our industry.”
At the previous evening’s 2014 PANPA Advertising & Marketing Awards Fairfax Media won an impressive fourteen awards, including the coveted Consumer and Trade Campaigns of the Year, Marketing Team of the Year and Best Digital Idea or Innovation. At the Newspaper of the Year Awards, the company took out the Print Centre of the Year Award for its North Richmond site.
The PANPA Advertising & Marketing Awards recognise outstanding talent and work that is reshaping how newspapers market and sell themselves to readers, advertising and media agencies. The Advertising awards categories acknowledge publishers’ in-house work, while both agency and in-house executions were eligible for the Marketing categories.
The revitalised program, combining the highly successful Ad awards with the Marketing categories of the Newspaper of the Year awards, attracted a record 450 entries from Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific and South-East Asia.
“It was pleasing to see such a high number of entries and the excellent calibre of submissions made it very tough for our panel of judges. I would like to congratulate all the award winners as we seek to recognise and celebrate outstanding talent and the advertising and marketing activities of the news publishing industry,” Mark Hollands said.
