Labelexpo Technology Workshops

These are a major development for Labelexpo Americas 2010 and will take place in a specially dedicated feature area in Hall F. The area will feature four working presses from Nilpeter - to represent HD Flexo, EFI - to represent inkjet, HP - to represent liquid toner and Xeikon - to represent powder toner. A neutral moderator will run the workshops which will see each press set up to produce the same job origination on identical substrate qualities. The aim is to show attendees how to set-up and run each narrow-web label press – whether conventional or digital printing - to optimize label print performance and quality, to demonstrate to them how to assess new product and market opportunities and to compare print quality and performance across different conventional and digital printing processes.

Beyond Labels – new opportunities for the converter

This area of the show floor in Hall C will be dedicated to the print and packaging process beyond the label which are opportunities for the label converter. Exhibitors in this area will demonstrate combined package printing and they will cover different products such as flexible packaging and medical products. Over 26% of label converters in North America also produce flexible packaging, so we are focusing on a growing market place. Previous show figures indicate a 50% increase in attendance from flexible packaging and folding carton suppliers and more than half of the top 25 dedicated flexible packaging converters have already attended Labelexpo Americas in the past.

Gather on the Green

Companies cannot ignore the latest green initiatives and environmental strategies that are being taken by the industry. This feature will allow suppliers to display their environmentally friendly projects and enable brand owners to be aware of the strategies that different businesses are taking to ensure that they are green giving them valuable information about what action to take to help reduce the impact of their business on the environment. There area will be able to be found in Hall C.

The conference

As in previous years, Labelexpo Americas will have a high-level conference, organized in collaboration with TLMI. This year will be focused on the use of new digital technologies and solutions, but will also have a strong view on the state of the industry and the market in North America across three streams. There will be reviews by top editors in the industry who will disclose their opinions on the recovery process that is changing the industry, showing what the best markets to invest in are, and the how to generate sales. Hot topics during the conference will include:

• A panel of brand owners talking about their wants and needs.

• Color management and the way the industry evaluates the use of color.

• Brand protection and how counterfeiters work to defraud manufacturers and deceive the public.

• Inkjet printing: key markets and applications.

• Automation and integration of digital solutions through the production chain

• Flexible packaging as a key opportunity.

• How to develop a sustainable supply chain.

• Converter partners: Brand success with packaging & social media. (A case study on a brewing company).

A ‘How to’ Digital Label Printing Masterclass from Mike Fairley

Label converters looking to invest in digital printing for the first time will have the opportunity to attend a three-hour Masterclass in which key industry experts will discuss the current state-of-the-art in digital printing, review and explain the main digital printing technologies, understand the importance of digital pre-press, workflow and color management, highlight label substrate requirements, explain in-line and off-line finishing options, and look at the changing role of management, sales and marketing in a digital environment.

Labelexpo Americas will also play host to the seventh prestigious Label Industry Global Awards on the first night of the show. The awards recognize and celebrate excellence in printing and labeling. Representatives from the industry were invited to enter their submissions at www.labelawards.com. The winners’ names will be revealed at an informal networking event on the Spirit of Chicago, Navy Pier.

Enviro-Mark Workshop: Getting to Bronze

This one-day workshop is essential for anyone interested or involved in the implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS). Over 1,300 exhibitors from around 50 countries will present their products and services in Cologne to more than 150,000 visitors from around the world.

Photokina 2010 will feature some conceptual changes that will address new target groups and further sharpen the profile of the trade fair. In addition to the "Meet the Professionals" area in Hall 1, further events have been tailored to meet the particular needs of professional photographers and imaging specialists.

The photokina CGI Solution Center in Hall 4.1 will present outstanding products and services in the area of computer-generated imaging as well as the related know-how.

The Fine Art Printing segment is also becoming more popular and will offer visitors at photokina 2010 the opportunity to directly compare the various high-quality fine-art papers on display and find out how they feel to touch at an individual presentation area with the slogan "Print me, See me, Feel me." In this way everyone can precisely analyse the strong points of each kind of paper and decide which kind is optimal for which purpose.

In Hall 5.1, photokina will also be offering a central meeting point for photography enthusiasts under the name "Meet the Communities at photokina." "Meet the Communities" has also been conceived as a marketplace where the organizers of photography festivals, as well as publishers and associations catering to end consumers can present themselves. Never before has the imaging sector had a presentation and meeting area like this for Web 2.0 fans. Workshops and presentations on the topics that users are excited about will round off the offerings of the event.

Another highlight will be the new concept behind Underwater Imaging World . This area, which will be located in Hall 3.1, will focus on conveying information and knowledge. In lectures and discussions, renowned underwater photographers will talk about the right technology, equipment, and diving spots for underwater photography. The broad variety of themes will address beginners and experienced underwater photographers alike. In addition, trade fair visitors can test for themselves the products offered by exhibitors - on the spot in a large diving tank. Furthermore, advanced and interested photography fans will have the opportunity to participate in workshops on specific themes in professional and semi-professional underwater photography.

Another new concept will apply to the photography exhibitions at the World of Imaging. Koelnmesse and the Photographic Industry Association (Photoindustrie-Verband) are moving in new directions as they search for photo exhibitions for Photokina. They have called on interested parties to submit their proposals for photography exhibitions with the aim of being awarded an exhibition area at Photokina.

The exhibitions in the Visual Gallery will once again be the artistic highlight of Photokina. For years now, the Visual Gallery and its exhibitions have acted as an impressive bridge between photo documentation, photo design, photojournalism, and art photography. The Visual Gallery offers 15 photo exhibitions presented compactly in one place - there's probably no other place where photography is presented in this form and at this high level of quality.

The exhibits will include works by the recent winner of the Dr. Erich Salomon Prize, Michael von Graffenried, who has lived and worked in Paris for the last 20 years and is breaking down the barriers between art and photography. The increasingly prominent area of photo design will be represented by well-known photographers such as Stephan Zirwes and Thomas Herbrich. And the American photographer Stephanie Sinclair, who used her camera to report on the Iraq War, will be exhibiting a series of gripping works. In her poignant images, this famous photographer will be showing, among other subjects, women who set themselves on fire - out of fear, shame, and despair. These are images that will leave the observer deeply moved.

The "Academy meets photokina" area is also dedicated to young up-and-coming photographers. Located in Hall 1 close to the Visual Gallery as well as being closely related thematically. "Academy meets photokina" has been an integral part of the supporting program of the World of Imaging for many years. Once again in 2010, students and graduates of technical colleges and art academies who have majored in photography can apply to participate in the competition for the Promotion Prizes. And once again, the three best entries will win awards having a total value of Euro 15,000.

With photo.COLOGNE, Koelnmesse will present another new feature at photokina 2010. Under the umbrella brand photo.COLOGNE, the Internationale Photoszene Köln with its IPK <festival>and Koelnmesse GmbH with its Visual Gallery and the city-wide event "photokina: cologne takes photos!" will combine their activities in September 2010. This will provide amateur photographers, professional photographers, and all those who are interested in artistic photography with a unique combination of an event and a cultural highlight focusing on the topic of photography. The mutual objective is to use this umbrella brand to consolidate and further expand the importance of Cologne as a center for photography. </festival>

PODi ANZ AppForum

PODi (The Print on Demand Initiative) is in its fourth year of bringing the PODi AppForum to the Australia/ NZ region.
